If you are an avid reader of my WIAW posts or follow me on Instagram, you know I LIVE for kombucha. I drink it at least every other day, and often daily. As someone who suffers from IBS, I found adding probiotics to my diet helped tremendously with symptoms I was experiencing. Whether or not you suffer from digestive issues, adding probiotics to your diet is very important to overall health. As a dietitian, I am constantly searching for new research and recommendations for my clients and for each of you. We are learning SO much lately about the health benefits of probiotics. It is not only related to your digestive health, but also supports your immune system, supports a healthy weight and so much more.
I was recently asked by a friend, what is the difference between kombucha versus drinking green (or black) tea? While all tea has health benefits, I especially love kombucha because it contains probiotics. Kombucha is created by adding SCOBY (aka living bacteria) to your green (or black) tea as well as sugar (the food for the bacteria) and allowing it to ferment.
Kombucha is one of my favorite ways to ensure a daily dose of probiotics. I often drink it with my lunch to help digest one of my larger meals of the day, plus I find it to be a great pick me up to tackle the rest of the day.
While I make my own ‘booch at home, I still enjoy buying other brands to get new flavor ideas for my own brews. Enter in LIVE soda Kombucha. This is a relatively new find for me, and I am so glad I tried it! LIVE was created by Trevor Ross in hopes of helping his family members enjoy the taste of soda without the consequences of drinking it (remember both regular and diet soda have detrimental effects to our health).
What I really love about this brand, is that they use only organic, fair trade certified tea and organic, fair trade evaporated cane juice (the “food” for bacteria) to make their ‘booch and use organic stevia to flavor their kombucha. While some brands dilute their kombucha with up to 5-20% juice to make it more palatable, LIVE is 99% pure kombucha. This means more healthy bacteria for you to enjoy!
I tried each flavor of LIVE soda kombucha, and while I thought a few of the fruit flavored varieties had a stevia aftertaste, their varieties of soda flavored kombucha BLEW ME AWAY. I could not get over how similar they tasted to the real deal! If you are struggling to get rid of your soda addiction, you have to try this brand. The Culture Cola, Revive Root Beer and Pure Doctor flavors are out of this world good! My favorite was hands down the Pure Doctor variety. As someone who used to love Diet Dr. Pepper (embarrassing, but true), I could not get over how similar it tasted!
I often tell my clients, who are skeptical of drinking kombucha, that it is a great replacement for soda. It’s fizzy just like soda but its natural BACTERIA creating the fizzy-ness. What’s even better about this particular brand of kombucha is that they are flavoring their’s to taste just like soda! How cool is that?!

Per usual, I started the day off with a pint of water with lemon and a shot of diluted apple cider vinegar. After that, I had a banana for pre-workout fuel and a pre-workout coffee made with 1/2 portion Slap Nutrition BCAA’s, 1 T coconut cream and a splash of almond milk (I blend this altogether).
When I got back from the gym (which felt so good after almost an entire week off from vacation this past week) I enjoyed a delicious breakfast and post-workout fuel of a smoothie bowl. Made with kale, 1 cup frozen berries, 1 scoop Bodylogix grass fed whey chocolate protein powder, 1 T Nutiva cacao powder, 1/3 cup kefir and splash of almond milk. Topped with 1/2 cup Puffins, 1 T peanut butter and 1 T cacao nibs. (PS: Measurements are estimates.)
Morning snackage included sips of LIVE soda kombucha (I drank the entire Pure Doctor one, and saved the other opened bottles for Nick to try) and toast topped with dijon mustard, TJ’s saurkraut and a fried egg.
Lunch was a big ol’ salad made with spring greens and butter leaf lettuce. Topped with roasted chicken breasts, farro, roasted sweet peppers, saurkraut, a few grapes and a quick dressing I made with dijon mustard + EVOO + ACV + maple syrup + spices. I also had a date stuffed with peanut butter (maybe a teaspoon?) and a small nugget of 85% dark chocolate.
In the afternoon I sipped on some homemade bone broth. Trying to give my body all the nourishment after my vaca last week. Matcha, maca, cacao, bone broth, turmeric milk, green smoothies, detox tea (basically just herbal tea), peppermint oil, probiotics galore (including kombucha). You name it, I am craving it!
Afternoon snackage included some Siggi’s whole milk Greek yogurt mixed with 1/2 container plain non-fat Greek yogurt (I needed to use it), maca and PB2, topped with frozen grapes, cinnamon and a sprinkle of cinnamon Puffins.
Dinner was a recipe test! Zucchini taco boats used ground grass fed sirloin mixed with the inside of the zucchini, kale, farro, whole milk plain Greek yogurt, salsa, hot sauce and spices (chili, cumin, smoked paprika, cayenne, and chipotle) topped with jalapeno havarti cheese. Almost perfect, so delicious!
And that’s it!
